About Njem Cooperative
We buy Gold from local small-scale artisanal miners and sell in the international market. Njem Cooperative does Due Diligence Guidance for responsible mineral supply chain to ensure that international standards do not further marginalize workers in the artisanal sector. This implies working on the formalization of the Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) sector which is a major source of mineral resource production in Cameroon. This sector is largely informal and associated with low levels of safety measures, health care and environmental protection. Our Due Diligence Guidance calls on stakeholders to engage in the legalization and formalization of artisanal mining communities.
While legislation varies across countries , the Due Diligence Guidance encourages buying artisanal gold provided that ASM activities are legitimate and that adequate due diligence is carried out and risks identified and managed accordingly.
Community Engagement
For more than 5 years, we have been working to tackle big issues in the artisanal mining sector in Cameron—poverty, economic development, peace and security, infectious diseases, climate change and more. Since our founding, one thing has remained constant at Njem Cooperative and that is community engagement—building solutions for human development in true partnership with those we serve.
Our staff, partners and communities around the world have worked in tandem to support strong local organizations, networks and actors so that they can achieve their goals and provide the support and services that their communities need to thrive and be resilient.
We call this engaged communities and it is embedded in everything we do.
Sustainability Pledge
Every day, Njem Cooperative works around the world to improve people’s lives, including helping communities in Cameroon protect the environment and face environmental challenges. Indeed, climate change is among the biggest threats to the well-being and futures of those Njem Cooperative serves. With our everyday operations, international NGOs contribute to environment degradation, namely through our carbon emissions. Njem Cooperative is extremely cognizant of this. Besides advocating for action across the international development sector, we are taking a number of steps to assess and reduce our environmental impact and to operate sustainably.
